Between the Middle Atlas Mountains and the Tadla Plain lies the city of Beni Mellal (or Aït Mellal). This historic city, dating back to the Middle Ages, is a large city with over 440,000 inhabitants, but it is best known for its kasbah.

The Kasbah of Beni Mellal—sometimes called Kasbah Bel Koush, Kasbah of Ain Asserdoun, or Borj Ain—is a small fortress overlooking the city. Built in the 17th century (during the reign of Moulay Ismail), this kasbah is very well preserved. It resembles a small castle and is surrounded by an orchard of orange and olive trees. The Kasbah of Beni Mellal is open to visitors and easily accessible by car.
