East of Fez, in the Tazekka National Park, lies the Friouato Chasm. Discover this impressive natural site, open to visitors. Consider renting a car to visit this chasm that leads underground.
The Friouato Chasm is one of the most impressive and mysterious sites in Morocco. Located near the city of Taza, in the heart of Tazekka National Park (itself east of Fez), the Friouato Chasm was discovered in 1934 by Élisabeth and Norbert Casteret.
Fitted for visits, the Friouato Chasm begins with a forty-meter-wide shaft that visitors descend via stairways. The size of the chasm is impressive, and the view is breathtaking. One hundred and twenty-five meters below, you reach the bottom of this first shaft. The visit then continues into the depths of the earth – not recommended for the claustrophobic. Visitors pass through galleries (sometimes narrow, sometimes vast), admiring the damp walls and stalagmites.
The Friouato Chasm is open to the public every day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Entrance costs 3 MAD per person, but a guided tour is recommended. This costs around 120 MAD per person.
