What to Do in Rabat

When visiting an imperial city, the first thing you should do is explore its medina. The first thing you’ll notice is that this medina is different from others, and the reason is that it was built by Muslims who came from the Andalusian region in Spain. The medina offers a fair amount of entertainment, as it contains a traditional souk, a beautiful fountain, and the Jewish quarter, often called the Mellah. Another must-see spot is the Hassan Tower. Originally, this structure was intended to be a mosque with a massive tower, but unfortunately, the project was abandoned after the death of the former Moroccan ruler Yaqoub Al-Mansour, who commissioned its construction. Because of the project’s cancellation, Hassan Tower became a tourist attraction, a place to explore ruins and take photos, and today it welcomes many visitors each year. Near Hassan Tower, you will find the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, where the former king is buried alongside his two sons. Next on our list is the Kasbah of the Oudayas. This modest blue-and-white town was once a fortified military camp built in the 12th century, but today, it looks more like a medina where you can wander through its quiet streets in peace and also shop for traditional goods. Outside the Kasbah, you can also enjoy a short boat ride along the Bou Regreg River. If exploring mysterious artifacts sounds appealing, head over to the Museum of History and Civilizations. Formerly known as the Archaeological Museum, this place holds a rich collection of ancient relics from prehistory to the Islamic era, guaranteed to satisfy your curiosity. Another option to consider is traveling about 13 kilometers north of Rabat to visit an exotic garden, a beautiful natural space created by horticulturist Marcel François. Filled with plants from Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and South America, this location offers a peaceful experience. On the other hand, if you’re not in the mood for nature, then the beach is the perfect place for you. Fortunately, there is a beautiful beach in Skhirat, a town located about 30 minutes from Rabat, where you can relax and forget all your worries.
